Green Line on Your iPhone Screen: Why It Happens and What to Do

Green Line on Your iPhone Screen

A green line on your iPhone screen usually points to a problem with the display itself. It can show up after a drop, some pressure, or too much heat. Sometimes it appears for no clear reason. Samsung and Pixel phones can develop the same issue, and the checks are much alike.

We’re a local repair shop serving Hampton Roads, with stores in Newport News, City Center, and Gloucester. Our certified technicians see these lines often. We offer free diagnostics, and most repairs finish the same day. Here’s how to tell a quick software glitch from a hardware fault.

Why Is There a Green Line on My Screen? (Quick Answer)

Most of the time, the OLED panel or its display connector has failed. A strip of pixels gets stuck on one color, and it shows up as a line.

Software causes exist, but they’re rare. If the line stays after a restart, hardware is the likely cause. That’s the honest answer, and the rest of this guide helps you confirm it.

What Causes a Green (or Colored) Line

Lines on a phone screen come from hardware problems most of the time. Here’s how the common causes compare.

CauseWhat you’ll seeUsual trigger
Damaged OLED or AMOLED panelA solid green, pink, or white line that never movesDrops, pressure, or age
Loose display connector (ribbon cable)A line that flickers or changes when you flex the phoneImpact or repeated bending
Dead pixelsSmall colored dots, or a thin line that growsWear or a hard hit
HeatA colored line after long gaming or chargingOverheating
Software glitchA line that comes and goes, or vanishes after a restartA bad update or app bug

iFixit notes that minor damage can break specific display lines, and those show up as green or purple lines. Some lines also spread over time. A single thin line can turn into several.

Quick Checks: Rule Out Software

These checks take a few minutes and cost nothing. Try them in this order.

  1. Restart the phone. Power it off, wait about 30 seconds, and turn it back on.
  2. Force restart it. On an iPhone 8 or later, press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Apple explains how to force restart your iPhone on its support site. On a Galaxy, hold Power and Volume Down for about 10 seconds.
  3. Update the software. On an iPhone, open Settings, then General, then Software Update. On a Galaxy, open Settings, then Software Update.
  4. Take a screenshot. Open it on a computer or another phone. If the line isn’t in the image, the panel is the likely problem. If it is, software may be drawing it.
  5. Remove the screen protector. A damaged protector can sometimes look like a line.
  6. Try Safe mode on a Galaxy. Hold Power, then touch and hold Power off until the Safe mode prompt appears. If the line vanishes, a third-party app may be the cause.

If the line survives every step, it’s most likely a hardware fault. A factory reset usually won’t help at that point, so you can skip it.

Green Line on a Samsung Screen

Galaxy phones use AMOLED panels, and a vertical line on a phone screen like this is a common complaint. Some owners notice it right after an update. The update may simply reveal a panel that was already failing.

For a quick test, open the dialer, type #0#, and tap Call. On some Galaxy phones, this opens a color test with red, green, and blue screens. If the line stays on every color, hardware is the likely cause. Our technicians handle Samsung screen repair for a wide range of Galaxy models.

Green Line After an Update or a Drop

An update rarely creates a green line on its own. More often, it’s just when you happen to notice one. Apps and iOS bugs can cause short display glitches, but a restart usually clears those.

A drop is different. Even when the glass looks fine, the impact can loosen the display connector or damage the panel underneath. The line might appear right away, or a few days later.

Did your phone also freeze after the update? Our guide on iPhone stuck on the Apple logo covers that problem.

Why It Usually Needs a Screen Replacement

A steady line means part of the panel or its connection has failed. No setting can reset that.

OLED panels are sealed units, so a technician can’t repair one pixel column at a time. iFixit says a laser repair is sometimes possible, but the cost makes a new screen the better bet.

That’s why we usually suggest iPhone screen repair for a line that won’t go away. If only the connector is loose, the fix may be smaller. A technician can confirm that on the bench.

Waiting can also backfire, since lines sometimes spread. In most cases, your photos, contacts, and apps stay untouched. The fault sits in the display, not in your storage.

Can You Prevent It?

You can’t stop every case. A few habits still lower the risk.

  • Use a sturdy case with raised edges. It absorbs part of the shock from a drop.
  • Keep weight off the phone. Sitting on it or packing it into a tight bag adds pressure.
  • Avoid heat. Don’t leave it in a hot car, and pause long gaming sessions if it gets hot.
  • Keep it dry. Liquid can damage the display and its connections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there a green line on my phone screen?

Usually because the OLED panel or the display connector has failed. A drop, pressure, or heat often triggers it. Software is a less common cause.

Can a green line on the screen be fixed?

Yes, but it usually takes a screen replacement. A restart can clear a software glitch. A hardware line won’t go away on its own.

Does a green line mean I need a new screen?

In most cases, yes. If the line remains after a restart, an update, and the screenshot test, the display is the likely problem. A technician can confirm that before you commit to a repair.

Can a software update fix a green line?

Rarely. An update can fix a real display bug, so install it anyway. If the line stays afterward, plan on a hardware repair.

What causes green lines after an update or a drop?

After an update, the line may be a short glitch or a panel that was already failing. After a drop, the impact can loosen the connector or damage the panel inside.

How much does a screen replacement help?

In most cases, it removes the line completely because it swaps out the failed panel. Your data stays on the phone. Ask your technician about parts and the repair warranty.
