Is Your iPhone not Updating? Try These Quick Fixes.

March 15, 2021

If you own an iPhone, you will be periodically notified when an iOS (operating system) update is available to download. If it’s a major release, it could contain new features and ways to use your phone. If it’s just a periodic update, it’s probably a patch to the last big release that fixes security issues or repairs bugs that have been discovered.

If you have trouble downloading the update when prompted, there is an old proverb that states, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” It means that you shouldn’t give up too easily. Persistence will eventually pay off in the end. That’s the first piece of advice we can provide if you’re having trouble getting iOS updates on your iPhone. In other words, if your phone doesn’t update when you first try it, reboot your phone by powering it down and powering it back up, then try again. If it’s still not updating, here are a few other options you can try:

– Memory. Not having enough memory is one of the major reasons an iPhone can’t process an update. Your phone will automatically move apps you have on your phone to an iCloud base that can be retrieved later (the app will still show on your phone but if you try to access it there will be a download lag to retrieve it) to free up space for the update. If it can’t free up enough space, you may want to clean up your phone manually by deleting apps you never use, moving your photos and videos to an external storage, etc. Once you have enough space, try downloading the update again.

– Connection. Sometimes an update won’t begin or complete because your phone is not connected to a strong WiFi source and the signal can’t get through. Check your connection and make sure it’s good, then try again.

– Battery. Your iPhone won’t process an update if you don’t have enough battery power to complete it. You can either charge your phone and try again or plug your phone into a power source and retry.

If you’re still having difficulties after trying the above quick-fixes, bring your phone to Tech Solutions. We’ll diagnose the problem, figure out how to resolve it, and get you back online with a fresh iOS download in no time.
