How to protect the data on your lost or stolen iPhone.

October 28, 2020

Losing your phone can be a traumatic experience, not only from the standpoint of no longer having something that is financially valuable, but also based on the amount of personal data stored within the phone. If you ever find yourself in this situation, there are a number of things you can do to protect your data, even if you never see your phone again.

– Register. If your phone is lost, contact the location you last remember having it, i.e., restaurant, movie theater, etc. Someone may have turned it in and you may merely need to go retrieve it. If it is stolen, contact the police and provide them with a serial number or the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number, if you have either of those numbers available.

– Passwords. It is a good idea to immediately change the passwords on your social media sites, bank accounts, email provider, and anything else that a thief can use for identity theft and/or fraud if they can get into your phone.

– Apps. Apple has a way you can track the location of your phone through their “Find Me” app. There is also an “App Lock” feature that you can add to your iPhone so that even if someone can unlock your phone, the apps will be protected by a different password or your personal biometrics (such as Touch ID or facial recognition). Be sure to engage both of these features as soon as you can before the phone is lost or stolen.

– Backup. Considering the amount of personal data that is normally stored on a smartphone, it’s a good idea to regularly back that data up. Even if you never recover your phone, you’ll be able to restore all of your music, photos, text messages and more when you buy a new phone.

Another traumatic experience for iPhone users is when their phones stop functioning normally. Don’t despair. Tech Solutions can diagnose and provide you with Cell Phone repair services for just about anything that goes wrong with your phone. We’ll also provide you with a great price, even if your warranty has expired, and we can normally have your phone back to you the same day you bring it in.
